In this article you will find many words to help you increase your vocabulary, punch up your essays and presentations, and ultimately increase your confidence.
In fact, there are a total of 1064 negative O words for you to explore. Some will be completely new to you while others will clarify a subtle meaning that you were unaware of before.
The English language is rich in its variety of words. It is the language that many authors prefer to write in as there are so many subtle differences in meaning among words.
That means precision in expressing your thoughts and ideas. That sort of clarity is powerful.
Join me as I journey through different categories of O words, and build your word power!
Negative Words That Start With O
We begin our journey by looking at a list of negative O words. Among these words are two that I want to look at more closely.
The first of these is the word obliterate.
This powerful word means to completely destroy so there is absolutely nothing left. This is a word you can use both in formal writing, and in more casual conversation.
If you and your friends are playing video games, you might refer to one player obliterating another.
Obliterate works equally well in a formal situation where you may be addressing the power of a chemical to wipe out a species of plant.
In addition to the word obliterate, obscure is another very helpful word to know as it has many uses.
Obscure means that something is not clear. A simple example of this is the sentence, “The clouds obscured the sun.” In this sentence, you cannot see the sun because of the clouds.
Obscure can also mean uncertainty. “The particulars of the wedding plans were obscure.” In this case, we do not yet know the details of the plans.
You can easily work both of these negative O words into your daily conversation. Give it a try!

Negative O Words To Describe A Person Or A Thing
It is extremely important to have the right words at hand to describe people and things.
If you are trying to explain an idea to your boss, you want to have the right words so you can explain your idea clearly and fully without any misunderstandings.
If you are talking about a particular person, you want to get the description of their personality right.
Using the wrong word unknowingly can lead to others getting the wrong idea about someone and that can have serious negative consequences.
So let’s look at a word that is used often, but is not always understood, and is sometimes used incorrectly.
Have you heard the word, ostentatious, before? This is what I call a million dollar word because it sounds impressive when you use it and it can be fitted easily into speech.
Both people and things can be ostentatious. A person who is ostentatious tries to get attention by being gaudy or over-the-top.
A person might go overboard in how they dress to get attention, like a man wearing a three-piece suit to meet his future in-laws when it’s a casual dinner, or a woman wearing high heels and a fancy dress to their child’s soccer game.
When we think of things that are ostentatious we can apply the word to a house that is over-the-top with pillars and a very grand, formal entrance, complete with fountains and statues in a neighborhood of bungalows.
Try adding ostentatious to your vocab!

Negative Adverbs That Start With O
I love adverbs! They do so much! Most end in “ly” and you can use them if you want to give some emphasis to something.
For example, the word “really” is an adverb that we use a ton because it emphasizes our point. “It was really annoying how she kept going on about adverbs.” Lol.
The word “super” can also be used as an adverb in the same way you would use, really. “I am super excited to talk about negative O words.”
Let’s go on to look at a negative O adverb that will be a cool addition to your vocab.
The word is obsequiously. Have you seen the movie, The Devil Wears Prada? In this movie the assistant, played by Emily Blunt, waits on her boss hand and foot in order to get her approval and acceptance.
Miranda, played by Meryl Streep, is an extremely demanding boss, and the assistant practically falls over herself to get every single detail right.
In this case, the assistant performs her role obsequiously, trying to impress Miranda at every possible opportunity.

Words that are not commonly spoken or used in everyday language can be a great addition to your vocabulary, and take it to the next level.

Funny Words That Start With The Letter O
Words play different roles in our lives, and one of the most important roles is humor. Some words just sound funny when you say them, and some words have a funny meaning.
Let’s look at some funny O words. We’ll start with the word, oodles.
“Oodles” means lots and lots. I will sometimes sign a birthday card to my kids with “Oodles of love”.
The term can apply to just about anything you have a lot of, like oodles of clothes, oodles of toys, oodles of chocolate chip cookie recipes.
It’s a fun and playful word, so it’s not for a serious topic. You wouldn't say, for example, there are oodles of problems in the world today.
Another funny O word is oddball. You could use this word to refer to someone who is unusual.
You could also use it to refer to something that is unusual, like an oddball idea, or an oddball color choice.
Oddball suggests silly or crazy.
